Part 3                               USEFUL GOAT REMEDIES

We all want healthy animals.  What we can provide for them before they are born will
greatly  increase their chances of survival with a long and productive life.  Use of
alternative methods  which are non invasive just makes sense.

CYSTIC AND/OR DOES THAT DON’T SETTLE Our most asked about remedy is for
Does  who continue to cycle even though the breeder saw them being bred.  We have
used this  remedy many times over the years for Does who just won’t settle.  Making
sure that the Doe is not selenium or copper deficient, that they have access to free
choice minerals and that they are not overweight, will increase their chances for
conception.  The same holds true for the  Bucks.
Apis Mellifica 6c and Pulsatilla 30c
Apis Mel 6c twice a day for 10 days.  On the 3rd day add Pulsatilla 30c once a day for 7
days.  Both remedies will end on the 10th day.   (A dose  would be 1 or 2 little bb’s)

IMMEDIATELY AFTER KIDDING Aconitum Napellus 30c (Aconite), Pulsatilla 30c,
Arnica Montana 30c.   Aconite can be given if the Doe seems shocky.  We give Arnica
and Pulsatilla with a little grain after kidding and again 30 minutes later.  We also give
this combination twice a day for 2 to 3 days afterwards. The
Arnica helps relieve sore
muscles and bruising;
Pulsatilla supports  the uterus to expel the afterbirth quickly.
Adding
Red Raspberry leaves a few days before  kidding and after, helps tone the uterus
and  contains Vitamin C.  We use this herb in capsule  form, break it open and add to
grain mixture.

KIDS Liquid Hawthorn Berries   If we have a new born kid who had a rough time
entering the  world or got slightly chilled and needs a little “jump start” to get going,
we use the liquid  Hawthorn Berries.  This is an herb that affects the circulatory
system allowing oxygen  utilization in the heart muscle and because it is a liquid, it is
assimilated faster by the body.  We pour some on our finger, insert into the mouth
and wait a few minutes.  If there is  minimal or no reaction, it can be repeated several
times.  We have many breeders who have  been happy with this  herbal remedy and
are amazed at how quickly the kid responds.

When we disbud and/or band the kids, we use a combination liquid Homeopathic
Remedy from Natures Sunshine.  It seems to relax the kids and they get over the
shock of disbudding or banding sooner.

COCCI   Albon or the Jeffers brand Di-Methox 12.5%.   How do you know if it's
Cocci?  If the system becomes upset and we see scours/diarrhea, it usually happens
when the Kids are between 2  and 3 months old.  We take an aggressive approach and
use the Di-Methox…if incorrect with the diagnoses, it won’t hurt them.  Even though
we try not using meds/chemicals, we found that this  product works quickly with no
side affects.  There are herbal products that are also effective,  however with our large
herd we need something that works quicker.  We treat on a per case basis,  not the
whole herd.   We found a tried and true method passed on to us by a long time
breeder. Using a clean syringe to draw up the liquid (make sure the needle is
removed!), this is the formula we use once a day:  3cc per 5lb the first day, 1.5cc per
5lb the 2nd day through day 5.  If the  weight is 6 or 7 lbs, we go with the lower dose, if
8 or 9  lbs we go with the higher dose.  You can  adjust accordingly. We usually see the
scours/diarrhea subside or completely go away by the  second application.
This is what the Homeopathic BB's look like.  The second picture is the Distress
remedy we use on the kids when disbudding and/or banding.
