Part 2                 HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES

Homeopathy is not a supernatural concoction or “magic potion”, it is an
accepted science based on the laws of similar: like versus like.  A remedy can
cure a disease if it produces symptoms that are similar in a healthy person, as
the symptoms of the disease itself.   If you have a fever, you take a remedy
that produces a fever.  There are many articles and books that can explain the
concept better than I can.  All I know is that it works.  Animals have no
preconceived ideas about alternative remedies.

On one occasion at a goat show, a friends buckling was stung on the eye by
either a bee or wasp. Within minutes the eyelid was swollen shut and brought a
great deal of discomfort to the animal.  I carry an assortment of remedies when
traveling, so I asked if I could use some of them on their goat.  The goat was
given a dose of
Aconitum Napellus (Aconite)30c potency and Apis Millifica 30c
potency.  I  repeated the dose about 15 to 20 minutes later and once more an
hour after  that.  Two hours later there was no swelling and the bucklings eye
looked  perfectly normal.  Aconite is given when there is a sudden onset and/or
shock  to the body.
Apis is made from bee venom and is used in cases of bites,
stings,  hives, edema and cystic ovaries.   I use to be highly allergic to bees and
ant  bites.   After taking the
Apis remedy, I no longer have to worry about an
Epi injection or getting myself to the emergency room.

The Homeopathic remedies can be purchased at a good health food store, such
as Wild Oats or Whole Foods, or can be ordered on line.  The product type I
purchase comes in a tube the size of a chapstick and the individual remedies
look like small bb’s .   The potencies I utilize are 30c and 6c.  Higher potencies
are used for acute problems and lower potencies for chronic, or long term.
When talking about a dose, it can be 1, 2 or even 3 of the little bb’s…it really
doesn’t matter with Homeopathic remedies.   When a human takes a dose, it
goes under the tongue and dissolves quickly to be assimilated faster by the body.
However, when given to a goat, I put the remedy into the palm of my hand and
top it with a little grain….works every time!

Remedies usually have no expiration date.  Keep all herbal and homeopathic
remedies out of the bathroom, kitchen or any place that humidity would be
present; a dining room or bedroom would be a better place to store them.

The following is a good list of basic remedies we have on hand at all times:
ACONITE - 30c  used for sudden onset or any shock to the system.
ARNICA MONTANA - 30c  used to support muscles in cases of soreness or
bruising.
APIS MELLIFICA - 30c AND 6c  hives, bites, stings, edema and cystic ovaries.
PULSATILLA - 30c  remedy that supports the uterus; helps to expel the
afterbirth.
SEPIA - 30c I use this for extremely hard kiddings and/or retained placentas.
BRYONIA - 30c  coughs.  Whenever I see a goat coughing before/after feeding
time, I give them this remedy, once a day, for several days.  Also used for
chronic allergy cough.

Homeopathy works for us.  We always have the remedies on hand and they are
easily transported when traveling to shows.  We have provided a list of several
good books on the topic, found on the Books and Links page.
This is how the remedies look.  Small
BB shaped pills and the container is
the size of a chapstick
